Sometimes we go to the cinema and watch interesting films. I have not got many friends, because friendship is very important for me and I do not always make friend. But still I have a very good friend and a very special person, her name is Katy. She is my best friend. We spend a lot of time together. What I like best about her is that she is always willing to help and share her knowledge, thoughts and feelings. I respect her for her fairness, intellect and modesty.

At present many people, both adult and young, suffer from weight excess. Too corpulent man looks unattractive and risks his health, overstraining his cardio system. Wholegrain bread and cereals are the most wholesome food, for they contain much fiber. Sometimes it is reasonable to substitute animal proteins by vegetable (peas, beans, soy, nuts, and lentil).

There 7 principles of healthy nourishment: 1) take pleasure from eating, 2) keep an eye on your weight, 3) eat more food rich in starch and dietary fiber, 4) reduce fatty food in your menu, 5) don’t take fancy to sweets, 6) get necessary vitamins and minerals from food, 7) in order to get all the necessary elements from food, the food itself should be diverse.

All the products can be divided into groups, containing similar elements. Combining products belonging to each group properly when eating, we can balance our nourishment regime and make it healthy eating.

The Earth is a home to millions of different kinds of living things which are linked in many ways. Together they make up the complex world of nature. Some are rivals or enemies, while the others depend on each for survival.

Wild plants and animals live in a particular set of surroundings, called their habitat. Nowadays people are in a hurry to change habitats to suit their own needs - to create farmlands or build cities, for exam- pie. The way people live threatens the delicate balance between living things and their habitats.

People create pollution which travels through the air and water from one habitat to another.

We need certain things to stay alive and healthy. We need clean air to breathe and pure water to drink. We need also food that is safe to eat and housing to shelter us. But we can't get all these things by ourselves. We live in a large community, so we can solve health problems only working together.

Polluted air is a community problem. Air becomes polluted in many ways. Cars, trucks, buses and airplanes are among the worst polluters. They send partly burned gases into the air. Air can be also polluted by smoke and gases from factories. Dirt, smoke and gases in the air can be carried away by wind, by air currents or settle over as a blanket of smog.

Air pollution can cause diseases. But everyone may feel uncomfortable and suffer from lack of energy when air isn't clean.

What do people do to cut down on air pollution? Today many factories use devices to reduce the smoke, dust or gases. Special kinds of gasoline for cars can help to reduce air pollution. More efficient engines can help too.

Water pollution is caused by dumping wastes into lakes, rivers and other bodies of water. Harmful wastes may also soak into the soil, or drain or run off from fields that have been sprayed with pesticides. Pesticides are often used to kill insects and weeds in cities or on farms. Polluted water can spread many diseases.

Every day people throw away amazing amounts of garbage and trash. What happens to these wastes after they are picked up by garbage trucks? Trucks take the garbage to out-of-the-way places, called garbage dumps. Sometimes the trash is burned, causing air pollution. But the more healthy way to get rid of solid wastes is to spread them over the land and pack them down. After that a thick layer of earth can be put down over the garbage and trees and grass can be planted.

The rapid rise in the human population and the corresponding demand for resources have had a dramatic impact on the natural world. While global warming, acid rain and holes in the ozone layer affect the whole planet, other changes threaten individual species.

World temperatures are currently rising every year. This is called global warming. It is caused by the buildup of gases and water vapour in the atmosphere. These gases form a layer that reflects the heat back to Earth, rather than allowing it to escape into the outer atmosphere. As the planet warms up, the water in the oceans will take up more space and water locked up in glaciers and the polar ice caps will start to melt. This could cause sea levels to rise and many habitats will disappear under water.

Acid rains fall when poisonous gases from power stations and vehicle exhausts mix with oxygen and moisture in the air. These gases become a part of the water cycle and may be carried a long way by the wind before they fall as acid rain or snow. Acid rains poison or kill wildlife in lakes, rivers and forests, and damage the surrounding plant life. The problem could be controlled by reducing vehicle emissions and limiting the gases released from power stations.

A natural layer of ozone gas high in the atmosphere provides protection against the Sun's harmful rays. However, certain pollutant gases are now destroying the ozone. Since 1979 "holes" have appeared in the ozone layer first over the Antarctic, then over the Arctic. Damaging ultraviolet rays from the Sun penetrate these "holes", slowing the growth of plants.

The Earth is our home but much of it is dirty and dying. By the year 2030 scientists report that 25% of all animals, birds, fish and insects may be extinct. Every year man cuts down more trees to provide paper, wood, medicines, and mineral fuel. But it isn't only trees and forests which are disappearing. Every rain forest contains millions of animals, insects and flowers. These are destroyed too. Governments in rain forests countries need to plan and work together. They should protect certain areas and plant new forests.

Today many scientists and world leaders realize that the Earth is in danger. It's really very simple. Either we stop killing the Earth, or we kill ourselves. We need a cleaner, healthier planet. Millions of ordinary people understand this too. Some of them belong to the so-called "Green" or earth-friendly organizations in countries all over the world. Groups, like "Green Peace", have already helped to stop the hunting of some animals, such as whales. What else can be done? I think that everyone should decide for himself how he or she can help our planet. And it is important not only to decide but also to carry out the decisions.

People in our country have the right for education. It is our Constitutional right. But it is not only a right, it is a duty, too. Every boy and every girl in

must go to school, that is, they must get a full secondary education.

Before children start going to school, many of them attend kindergartens until they are six or seven. Compulsory education in our country begins at the age of 7, when children go to primary school. This is the first stage of their schooling and lasts three or four years. The children learn to read, to write and to count. They also have Drawing, Music and Physical Training classes. Secondary stage begins from the 5 form where children have a lot of new subjects, such as Literature, History, Natural Science, Physics, Algebra and Geometry, a foreign language and others. Examinations are taken at the end of the 9^th and the 11^th year. After passing their school-leaving exams at the age of 16 or 17, young people receive a Certificate of Secondary Education. Some children may leave school after the 9^th form and continue their education at vocational or technical secondary schools or colleges.

. There are specialized secondary schools with a profound study of certain subjects, such as foreign languages, Literature, Physics or others. In specialized language schools a foreign language is taught from the second year. Among the new types of secondary schools there are gymnasiums and lyceums, some of which are free.

Among higher educational institutions there are universities, institutes, academies, where the course of studies is normally five years. To enter a higher educational institution young people have to take entrance examinations. Higher as well as secondary education in our country is free. But at present a lot of fee-paying independent colleges, departments of different universities appeared in the sphere of education. is a primary responsibility of each of the 50 states. There are no National Educational Standards or regulations, as there are in many other countries. Each state has its own laws for the educational system, which is controlled by the Board of Education. Although there is a federal Department of Education, its function is to gather the information, to advise and to help finance certain educational programs. In spite of local control, school systems throughout the country are very similar. A child can transfer from a school in one state to a school in another without any serious difficulties, as the same basic subjects are taught throughout the country.

Education is compulsory for every child in the

. There are two major divisions in the elementary and secondary school system in the

- public schools, where education is free of charge and private schools where the cost of education is rather high. Some of those schools are religious and they are maintained by churches.

The normal school system consists of 6 years of elementary school and 6 years of high school. The school children are called "students", not pupils. In elementary school students learn the ABCs of reading and writing, drawing, painting and singing. Many of them teach modern languages such as French, Spanish, German and now Russian. Mathematics, English composition and Grammar, General Science and Literature, Music, PT, Home Economics are learned by elementary school students.

: Junior High Schools are for children from 12 to 15 years old; Senior High Schools are for students of 15 to 18 years old. The highest grade is A or 95% -100%. A passing grade is 75%. In high schools students get credits for the subjects they choose if they fulfill minimum requirements.

Do you ever want to be famous? I think that most people say YES. But what exactly makes people famous. First of all it’s talent of course. If you can do something better than anyone you become famous. As example Albert Einstein, Andrei Sakharov, Mozart, Isaac Levitan etc. Other ways to become famous are mass media (the Internet, television, radio, newspapers), sensational scandals, gossips and death. For example Joan Rowling became famous thanks to TV, after Agatha Christie’s death her books were sold in increasing quantities.

But I want to tell you about my favorite writer. I think that Harper Lee is one of the greatest Americans writers. She wrote only one novel "To kill the mocking-bird” but this book had enormous success. It has been translated into over ten languages. This novel has been given a purse and filmed.

Nowadays most writers, singers, artists want to become famous in short period of time. That’s why most of all are forgotten after their death or earlier. But till they are famous they try to enjoy this fame, take as more fans as that can and get into the history. That’s why you can find a lot of information about your idol in the Internet, television, radio, newspapers. As for me, I try to read only reliable sources of information.

Most people believe it must be great to become famous. But in spite of the advantages there are drawbacks, too. On the one hand, you get special privileges but on the other, you will not be able to have a normal life. Apart from that, you don’t have to worry about money. But the biggest disadvantage for famous people is that they don’t usually lead a normal life: they have to travel a lot and work long hours. Also, they might have problems finding real friends who are interested in them, and not the glamorous lifestyle.

Fame is not constant. Today you are the god – tomorrow you are a nobody. Don’t think that to be famous is cool. Sometimes it’s not true.

Your new country has plenty of opportunities for enjoyment of your leisure time, whether you like shopping, music, good restaurants, or other fun activities. In fact, some people feel almost overwhelmed by the numbers of choices that they have when they first move here! At the least, you will be able to enjoy the wealth of diversions available for recreation as you explore and get to know your new city.

Most communities will have active sports clubs and teams, and welcome new members. Baseball, basketball, volleyball, football, and soccer may all be represented in area city leagues. To join, you will want to contact your city's recreational department for information. Often local YMCAs and YWCAs will also have information on sports activities and classes.

Some high schools and colleges have recreational facilities and classes that are open to the community during certain hours (such as tennis courts). You may want to call your local community college or high school to find out about these. And larger parks will usually have an area for baseball and athletic recreation, and may have community recreation classes that include dance, tennis, or other sports. They may also have hiking, biking and riding trails, and other special areas for outdoor enjoyment.

Your interest in sports may be as a spectator, and again most communities will give you an opportunity to enjoy your favorite sport. Many cities have their own sports teams. If you live in a medium sized city or larger, you probably will have access to a zoo. These are special areas where animals are kept to be viewed. Some of the larger zoos have also tried to create natural habitat- like surroundings for the animals, and a special type of zoo (known as a wild animal park) may be available in some states with moderate climates.

Many cities will also have botanical gardens, which are beautiful areas carefully landscaped with a variety of plants. Some include indoor gardens with tropical plants, and others in mild climates have outdoor gardens that emphasize landscaping, different climate zones, and even lush "tropical gardens" that can be enjoyed by visitors. The San Diego zoo, one of the largest zoos in the world, has combined its zoo with a large botanical garden that mimics the natural habitat for many of its animals.

You may also want to visit some of the larger estates open to the public. These are often beautifully landscaped grounds surrounding a historical mansion (such as the Hearst estate in northern California) and are well worth visiting.

The United States is famous for some of its theme parks, including Disney Land in Anaheim, California and its sister park, Disney World /Epcot Center in Orlando, Florida. Many cities have smaller amusement parks that include roller coaster and amusement rides. Some are water parks, and will have water slides, swimming, and other attractions for visitors. Tickets can be expensive, and the food is not cheap, so check whether you can bring in your own picnic basket to save money while visiting. And be sure to bring a change of clothes to water parks, since splashing children and dripping swim suits can soak clothes quickly.

You can find out where local theme parks or amusement parks are in your area by checking the yellow pages, asking family and friends, or by looking in the entertainment section of your local paper. You can also try calling your chamber of commerce, or check with your local recreation department for information on parks.

While traveling, you may want to stay at a hotel. There are a variety of hotel types that range from budget to luxury. City guides, AAA (American automobile association) guide books, and local yellow pages will contain information about local hotels and motels.

In most places, you can visit the local hotel or motel and make a reservation at any one of their other branches around the country. It is a good idea to make reservations ahead of time, since especially on weekends and during summer months, the best hotels become busy and may be booked up for days or even weeks ahead.

The book is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It influences our characters, minds and thoughts, enriches our mind with knowledge and besides reading is an enjoyable pastime. Reading opens new horizons before us. Books give us a unique chance to link up with the authors who lived hundreds and thousands of years ago. Thanks to books we can talk to people who lived in different ages and countries. Thus I need no company when I have a good book to read. People need books in their everyday life. They need books when they study, they need them when they work, they read them just for pleasure.

If we want to read this or that book we buy it, take it from our friends or go to the library where we can take it or read in the reading-hall.

There are libraries in every big or small town, in every village or some other settlement. In our town there is the Central library. It is very large. Here you can see long shelves full of books by different writers, magazines and newspapers. The librarian will always help you to choose the book to read. There are some libraries for specialists only. For instance, there is a library of foreign literature in Samara. But nevertheless, I usually go to my school library.

It's very convenient to use your school library, because you don't have to go anywhere if you must make a report, the librarian knows you well and can give you a piece of advice. There are a lot of different useful books there: such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, textbooks and many others. Sometimes I come here to take books for pleasure: adventure stories, love or detective stories, science fiction books or poems.

Practically all people enjoy reading for pleasure. If they can't find the book they need they will certainly find it in the library. There are libraries famous all over the world, such as the State Public Library in Moscow. It has the largest collection of books and manuscripts. In Washington there is the Library of Congress. According to the Law, a copy of every book, magazine or newspaper issued in

America

, should be kept there.

As long as people read they will always visit librarues.
